LIVERPOOL, England (AP) Philip Carter, who was chairman of Everton during a trophy-filled period for the English club in the mid-1980s, has died. He was 87.
Everton says in a statement that Carter died peacefully at home on Thursday after a short illness.
Carter, who served as president of the English Football League and a vice-president of the Football Association, was chairman of Everton when the team won two league titles, an FA Cup and the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup from 1984-87.
Carter had two spells as Everton chairman.

He was a director of a British retail and betting company.
