FIFA says African soccer leader Issa Hayatou was mistakenly announced as head of its committee organizing Olympic tournaments.

The governing body says its website made a ''technical error'' naming Hayatou, who is an International Olympic Committee member.

The Confederation of African Football issued a news release Tuesday saying Hayatou was taking charge of events at the Summer Games and Youth Olympic Games.

FIFA says it will communicate appointments ''in due course.'' They are typically confirmed by FIFA's executive committee, which meets Oct. 20-21.

Hayatou's apparent new job made headlines because the IOC's ethics commission is investigating allegations he took kickbacks from FIFA's former marketing partner.
