Barcelona says Cesc Fabregas has injured his right ankle and that it has advised the Spanish football federation that the midfielder will not be able to join Spain's squad for this week's friendly against Ecuador.

Fabregas was called up by Spain coach Vicente del Bosque for Wednesday's match, which he described as an important preparation game for upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Spain plays Finland in a Group I qualifier on Sept. 6.

The club says Sunday that Fabregas ''has sprained an external lateral ligament in his right ankle.''

Fabregas limped off during Saturday's preseason friendly in which he scored once and set up Neymar and Gerard Pique in Barcelona's a 3-1 win against Malaysia XI.
