FC Twente have suspended Douglas for five games following his reaction to being sent off on Sunday.

The Brazilian defender, who has also been fined an undisclosed amount, was shown a red card in the 44th minute of Sunday's 2-1 defeat at AZ Alkmaar following a foul on Pontus Wernbloom.

Douglas reacted by body-checking referee Ruud Bossen and lashing out further at Wernbloom.

Twente chairman Joop Munsterman and coach Michel Preud'homme accepted the club had to act.

Munsterman told the club's official website, www.fctwente.nl: "Emotions are part of football but it is totally unacceptable that this has happened at FC Twente."

Preud'homme added: "I support the ruling of the club. During the course of a match emotions can run away with us but that should never have happened.

"It does not fit with the culture of FC Twente."
