Dortmund inches closer to Champions League place with smacking win over rival Bayern
Borussia Dortmund condemned Bayern Munich to a second straight defeat in the Bundesliga, dismantling the champions 3-0 in their own Allianz Arena.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marco Reus and Jonas Hofmann scored the goals as Jurgen Klopp's side all but mathematically secured their place in the Champions League next season.
Bayern's woes were compounded in stoppage time when Rafinha was shown a red card, although the defeat to their rivals from Westphalia was ultimately not so painful with still 17 points between the two sides at the top of the table.
Klopp left Bayern-bound Robert Lewandowski on the bench to start with, but his opposite number Pep Guardiola fielded his strongest side, clearly keen to bounce back from a first league defeat in 54 games last weekend.
Dortmund looked keener to get one over their rivals, though, and they played with the confidence they had shown in the midweek Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
Bayern had their habitually large slice of possession, but, apart from a Mario Gotze shot which struck Mats Hummels in the face, they had little to show for all of their time on the ball.
A minute after that chance, Dortmund took the lead, with Mkhitaryan placing his shot between Manuel Neuer and Rafinha, and past Javi Martinez on the line, from Reus' pass.
Soon after, Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang's shot was pushed behind by Neuer as Dortmund sought a second, although it was Mario Mandzukic at the other end who went closest to providing a second goal in the first half with a volley which Roman Weidenfeller saved well.
Neuer did not emerge for the second half, Lukas Raeder thrust into his Bundesliga debut due to a calf injury for the Germany number one.
One of the 20-year-old's first duties was to collect the ball from his goal after a clinical counter-attack was finished off by Reus, stretching out his left leg to divert the ball in from close to the penalty spot after Mkhitaryan had launched Aubameyang.
Dortmund made it three in the 56th minute with Hofmann collecting a long ball forwards from Sokratis Papastathopoulos and, after finally getting the ball under control, striking it past Raeder, who perhaps lacked the intimidating presence of the man he had replaced between the Bayern posts.
Mandzukic saw a consolation effort ruled out for offside and the frustration then got the better of Rafinha, who was shown a straight red card in stoppage time after he raised his hand and pushed Mkhitaryan in the face.
Both sides will now turn their attention to the DFB-Pokal semi-finals in midweek, with Bayern hosting Kaiserslautern and Dortmund facing Wolfsburg to potentially set up another clash between the top two sides in Germany in Berlin.
