American midfielder Clint Dempsey played his first match for Fulham following the World Cup, entering as a 60th-minute substitute in Saturday's 1-0 exhibition loss at relegated Portsmouth.
Dempsey was among several World Cup players who rejoined the Cottagers, a group that included goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer of Australia and defender John Pantsil of Ghana.
American forward Eddie Johnson, cut when the U.S. pared its World Cup roster from 30 to 23, replaced Fulham's Zoltan Gera at the start of the second half.
Marc Wilson scored in the 31st minute. Mark Hughes, who replaced Roy Hodgson as Fulham's manager this week, watched from the directors' box.
