Delph hopeful for fresh start

The former Leeds man has had his first-team chances limited since being signed by former Villa boss Martin O'Neill in 2009. Injuries and loss of form have marred the £6million move but, after completing 90 minutes against Fulham last weekend, Delph has renewed optimism. "I am chuffed with starting the first game and hopefully I can do well for this gaffer," the 20-year-old told the Daily Mirror. "It was my first 90 minutes in a long time and hopefully, with the new manager, the people around him and the players around me, I can improve. "It is very good for me personally, because I haven't been in favour much in my Villa career so far. "There is a lot to work to do for myself personally. I pinged a few good passes at Fulham, but I also shanked a few as well." Meanwhile, new signing Shay Given, 35, is struggling to be fit to face his former club Blackburn on Saturday. The goalkeeper picked up a groin strain in the 0-0 draw at Craven Cottage, and Delph admits he is fast becoming a crucial member of the squad. "He is a really strong character," said Delph. "For the whole team and the back four he has been unbelievable. "As long as we can keep him in there, I think we will do really well this season."
