Coyle confident Davies will shine

The Wanderers captain was called up to Fabio Capello's squad for the first time for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley a week today. Davies, 33, has earned a reputation in the Premier League for being over-physical at times but Coyle thinks the player will benefit from being an unknown quantity at international level when it comes to the officials. And although the striker may not be the most prolific of his generation his manager said his worth to the team should be measured in more than goals. "I think he can bring the best out of people. He can lead the line himself and if you want to play one up front with two wide he will flick things through for the wingers," said the Bolton boss. "Not only can he score goals, he can create for others and he is a terrific all-round player. "He has so many different dimensions he can help a team. Many players have benefited from him before. "Nicolas Anelka, I think, will tell you what a fantastic partner Kevin Davies was. "I think there will be a freshness about him (in the England squad) because sometimes Kevin Davies is pre-judged. "I analyse all our games and some of the treatment he gets - and I'm not saying he doesn't give any out because he is a physical player - means he is sinned against an awful lot of times and we don't get free-kicks. "But he's an honest player and takes so many knocks and in international football referees won't be aware of him and he'll get a fair rub of the green." Coyle is certain Davies' reputation works against him domestically but he would not be drawn on whether it had cost him the chance of making his England debut sooner. However, he said whatever people thought of the former Chesterfield striker his commitment to the cause should never be questioned. "I can't comment on what went before, you'd have to ask every individual England manager, but we all as managers like different players," added Coyle. "But he is more than capable of stepping into that squad and really showing his quality and helping his country. "That is the one thing he has always been desperate to do. He was eligible for Scotland and there was also a third party interested but he was just so focused. "All he ever wanted to do was play for England and if it passed him by, it passed him by but he wasn't going to play for anyone else. "He now has an opportunity to win that elusive cap and hopefully he will get the chance to do that." Coyle also praised Davies' mental fortitude, which he said was often overlooked because of his physical strength. "He had a big-money move to Blackburn which didn't go the way he planned so he had to bounce back from that," he said. "He has shown tremendous mental strength aside from the footballing qualities and that is why he is where he is now. "It would have been easy for him to think his chance had passed him by at 33 but he has surpassed what he has done before and he has to continue to do that. "We know he can score goals, because he has shown it year-in, year-out, and he may not be perceived as a 20-goal-a-season man but he is always up in double figures. "And he creates even more than double that in terms of assists for the things he knocks down and puts opponents under pressure - that is where other people benefit. "I think he has added that little bit of cuteness to his play to go with his other strengths and I am fortunate to have him."
