Copenhagen reaches knockout stage

FC Copenhagen clinched second spot in Group D by beating Panathinaikos 3-1 on Tuesday, becoming the the first Danish team to advance to the knockout stage of the Champions League.
Martin Vingaard gave Copenhagen a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute and Jesper Gronkjaer doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 50th.
Panathinaikos striker Djibril Cisse scored an own-goal in the 73rd, before the Greek league champions pulled one back through Cedric Kante in the 90th minute.
Copenhagen has 10 points in the group, four behind Barcelona and four in front of Rubin Kazan.
Jubilant home fans voiced their delight after the final whistle as the players stayed on the pitch amid a sea of blue and white flags.
"It's fantastic, really fantastic. We have written history. We fully deserved it," said former Chelsea winger Jesper Gronkjaer after the game.
The Danes played their final Group D game with all the confidence of a team that leads its domestic league by 19 points, stroking the ball around accurately from the first whistle.
Martin Vingaard opened the scoring when he drifted into a central position, collected a pass from the lively Christian Bolanos and curled a low right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
Copenhagen's dominance told again in the 50th minute when Gronkjaer sent a penalty kick past the outstretched arms of Alexandros Tzorvas. The penalty was awarded after Gronkjaer was felled by defender Nikos Spyropoulos.
Dame N'Doye seemed certain to extend Copenhagen's lead in the 57th minute but looked on in disbelief as his shot hit the post after he had rounded the goalkeeper.
Panathinaikos striker Djibril Cisse headed the ball into his own net for Copenhagen's third goal as he dropped back to defend a corner in the 73rd minute.
