A revised plan for World Cup qualifying would retain the six-team final round in North and Central America and the Caribbean, which would allow the United States and Mexico to play each other.

CONCACAF officials have sent the new plan to the executive committee for approval this week, secretary general Chuck Blazer said Wednesday.

The six-team final round has been used since the 1998 tournament, but CONCACAF originally planned to scrap it.

CONCACAF hoped to get a guaranteed four spots at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but FIFA's executive committee voted on March 3 to keep the region at three berths plus the chance to get a fourth in a playoff. That decision meant the qualifying format CONCACAF originally had proposed would have required more games than available dates on the FIFA international calendar.
