Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund has extended the contract of coach Juergen Klopp by two years through to 2014.

Klopp arrived at the club in 2008 and Dortmund has improved every season. The club is chasing its first championship since 2002 and has a seven-point lead with the season approaching its halfway mark.

''I am incredibly happy that the club has so much faith in me and my staff and I am very proud to be a part of this project,'' Klopp said Thursday.

The 43-year-old charismatic coach said he was lucky to be in a club where he could work long-term. Klopp came to Dortmund from Mainz, which is now second in the standings.

''We didn't want to separate what belongs together,'' Dortmund's managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke said.

Dortmund won the Champions League in 1997 but nearly went bankrupt after its 2002 Bundelsiga championship.

Klopp has rejuvenated the squad and Dortmund is the second youngest team in the Bundesliga after Hoffenheim.
