Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini could look to strengthen his defence during the transfer window, despite admitting his squad is "too big".

Mancini has made improving team spirit one of his top priorities, but concedes that is difficult due with the numbers he has to work with at Eastlands.

As City are not in Europe this term the former Inter Milan boss believes he has more than enough numbers at his disposal, but with a Champions League place the target for the current season and a title challenge the aim next term, the Italian is looking to bring in added strength in defence.

He said: "We have many good and talented players in the squad, but we need to improve our team spirit. The squad is too big.

"It becomes difficult to work with more than 24 players when you don't play in Europe.

"We won't change many players. I am satisfied with them and after one month here I have to admit the situation is much better then I expected before starting the job.

"Maybe we will need to strengthen the defence, but overall I'm happy with these players."

Mancini insists the big-spenders will fight to the very end in the Premier League title race, but a place in the top four is the overall aim for the campaign.

"I would be arrogant if I said that we are going to win the Premier League this year," he said.

"But I really think we can fight until the very end.

"The target I have set is a place in the next Champions League, which would be a huge step forward for this club. But you shouldn't put limits on your ambitions."
