Chelsea have announced that Michael Essien will be out for up to six weeks after returning from the African Nations Cup with a knee injury.

Essien, 27, sustained the injury in training while on international duty at the tournament in Angola.

The Ghana player arrived back at the club's Cobham training ground this week and Chelsea's medical staff carried out an examination of the affected knee.

Carlo Ancelotti revealed: ''He had a tear in the meniscus, and he has to stay out for four to six weeks. I hope four.

The Blues boss also added that Essien's absence will not prompt a move into the transfer market.

He said: "In January, Essien was not here, he was at the African Cup, maybe we lose him for one month, it is not good news but I think that we will do a good job again."
