The Scottish club Celtic has been cited for a breach of rules after fans displayed political banners before a Champions League game against AC Milan.
European soccer's governing body prohibits political statements at matches. It calls this ''an incident of a nonsporting nature,'' and it will be dealt with Dec. 11.
Celtic fans held up images Tuesday of Scottish historical figure William ''Braveheart'' Wallace and Irish republican icon Bobby Sands, who died while on hunger strike in prison in 1981. Other banners included slogans reading: ''The terrorist or the dreamer? The savage or the brave?''
Celtic traditionally draws fans from Catholic communities in Scotland and Ireland.
The match came hours after Scottish nationalist politicians published proposals in connection with an independence referendum next year.
