Mallorca ended Villarreal's recent revival in spectacular style with a 4-0 win at the Iberostar.
There was little to choose between the Primera Division sides in the first period, but the hosts took the lead just before the break as Chori Castro's great free-kick was turned in from close range by Victor Casadesus.
Castro's set-pieces continued to cause the visitors problems after half-time and the second goal arrived in the 53rd minute as Diego Lopez could only punch Castro's cross into the path of Jose Luis Marti, who headed into the empty net.
Victor got his second goal of the game following a flowing counter-attack 12 minutes later and Jose Nunes rounded things off with a free header from another Castro corner.
Villarreal had been one of the league's form sides coming into the game with 10 points from their previous four encounters and they stated the better, with Marco Ruben's seventh-minute effort forcing Dudu Aouate into a smart save.
However the visiting defence were struggling every time Mallorca got a set-piece in a dangerous position and after Nunes had sent an early warning when he volleyed over, the opener arrived four minutes before the break.
Lopez was somewhat fortunate to get away with just a yellow card when he brought down Tomer Hemed just outside the area, but from the resulting free-kick Villarreal were punished as Victor crept between two defenders to power in Castro's cross from five yards.
The Uruguayan's delivery was again key eight minutes after the break as Lopez came through a crowd of bodies to try and clear his free-kick but instead just served to palm the ball straight onto Marti's head for the hosts second of the afternoon.
Mallorca's confidence was now flowing and if there had been a slight touch of fortune about Marti's goal their third was all down to quality counter-attacking play. Castro again played a key part as he raced over the halfway line to free Victor inside the area and his shot across Lopez gave the goalkeeper no chance.
Two minutes later it was four and Castro's fourth assist of the game as his corner to the back post found Nunes who nonchalantly headed back across goal into the far corner.
The victory moves Mallorca ahead of Villarreal and up to 12th, whilst the Yellow Submarine remain just three points above the drop zone in 17th.
