Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad for tonight's friendly with Scotland (live on FOX Soccer, 3pm ET) due to an eye infection, the Football Association has confirmed.
The 32-year-old midfielder had been in line to win his 30th cap at Wembley.
A statement published on thefa.com read: "Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad to face Scotland due to an eye infection.
"Carrick, who has been capped 29 times by England, has returned to his club and misses the game on Wednesday evening."
Carrick was named the man of the match during Manchester United's FA Community Shield win over Wigan on Sunday.
United begin their Barclays Premier League title defense at Swansea on Saturday.
Fellow United player Ashley Young had already been ruled out of the squad with an ankle problem which forced him to miss the win against Wigan.
Liam Bridcutt, who made his one and only Scotland appearance against Serbia in March and is suffering from a groin problem, is the only absentee from Gordon Strachan's original pool of 29 players.
With another 13 midfielders at his disposal, Strachan has not added to his larger than usual squad.
A host of regulars return after missing June's victory in Croatia, including Celtic captain Brown and experienced striker Kenny Miller.
However, skipper Darren Fletcher, defender Gary Caldwell and striker Steven Fletcher remain sidelined for the Scots.
