Fabio Capello highlighted the performance of Andy Carroll as England lost 2-1 against France on Wednesday.

The Three Lions struggled against Les Bleus at Wembley as a young side found themselves 1-0 down when Karim Benzema opened the scoring.

Mathieu Valbuena made it 2-0 to the visitors while Peter Crouch scored a late consolation for England.

Capello was pleased to reward the likes of debutant Carroll with a run-out, as the Newcastle striker demonstrated his potential against the French.

The Italian said: "I am happy for Carroll for his performance and I understand he is a good player for the future for England.

"It is important for me that some young players play here at Wembley against a good team like France.

"In this friendly fixture it was important to know the value of the young players.

"I told the players it is different to play with the Under 21s than to play here (against France).

"In the first half France played better, in the second half we played better."
