A leading European football body has called on lawmakers to pass legislation forcing betting operators to share revenues with the sport.
A strategy council with links to UEFA wants football to get a ''fair financial return'' to address its concern with ''growing unauthorized commercial use of football competitions for betting purposes.''
The council wants clubs and competition organizers to be compensated for sharing their intellectual property rights with the betting industry, saying the extra money is ''essential'' to fund grass-roots football and tackle match-fixing.
The council is chaired by UEFA President Michel Platini and includes delegates from European clubs, leagues, players' unions and national federations.
