Trevor Brooking believes Steve McClaren could be in contention for a second spell as England head coach after rebuilding his reputation on the continent.
McClaren replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson after the 2006 World Cup but lasted only 17 months as England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.
But the former Middlesbrough manager has since led FC Twente to the Eredivisie title and is now at the helm of German side Wolfsburg.
Brooking, the Football Association's director of football development feels, McClaren's name "will be in the frame again" with England if he continues to impress.
Fabio Capello has already indicated he will step down when his current contract expires in the summer of 2012.
Brooking said: "Steve has done fantastic to get a title. PSV and Ajax are usually the sides in Holland who do that and now Wolfsburg are picking up.
"It is a big challenge and it is great for an English coach. Terry Venables went abroad and did well, but Sir Bobby Robson was the one manager who went to three countries and was a massive success.
"We have to try and get more English coaches doing that. Sometimes we are a bit lazy with our language. I am watching other coaches and there are people speaking four or five different languages.
"We have to encourage our coaches to do that so that they go abroad and get that experience if they can. They have to do it on merit and Steve has done well."
Brooking added: "I think if you asked Steve, he probably wanted that little bit more experience and I think that is why he has gone abroad.
"It was a challenge he saw, he has done well to go abroad and he has adapted really well.
"Could Steve do the England job again? I am sure if he continues to be a success his name will be in the frame again.
"If you think he will be a lot more experienced this time around and he has learnt his lesson, then why not? I wouldn't rule out anyone. I think it would be very unfair to do that."
Brooking revealed integrating another home-grown coach into the England set-up would be assessed after the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro on October 12.
He said: "We clearly stated that we would get the three qualifiers out of the way and then look at it to try and involve another English coach to give him experience.
"Everyone talks about Stuart Pearce, who has been with the Under-21s for three years, but there is no automatic progression here.
"What we need is to learn off Fabio. We need to give some experience to English coaches."
Brooking believes Capello remains the right person to be in charge of England at present despite a disappointing World Cup campaign.
He said: "I saw nothing in the summer to say he wasn't (the right person).
He is still a very good manager. I looked at the end (of the World Cup) and still felt he was the right person to take us on.
"There was a lot of negativity coming out of the tournament, which we all understood because we didn't get anywhere near to what we wanted out of the tournament. Fabio will admit that.
"But we have made a good start to the European qualifiers. If we defeat Montenegro, then nine points from three games will be a great start. Then everyone will say it is a good decision that Fabio stayed on."
