Werder Bremen says it has released midfielder Daniel Jensen from his contract with immediate effect following the Dane's criticism of coach Thomas Schaaf.

Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs said Schaaf told Jensen the news before Wednesday's training session, saying ''he no longer has a role in our plans.''

Jensen's contract was due to expire at the end of the season and the club had already decided not to renew it.

The midfielder criticized Schaaf in the local press after he was left out of Bremen's injury-hit squad in the 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, despite declaring himself fit, describing it as a ''a slap in the face.''
