Police in Brazil say they are investigating a sports promotion company for the suspected embezzlement of nearly $4 million of public funds to promote a 2008 friendly between Brazil and Portugal.
Police inspector Henri Perez Lopes tells the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper that the municipal government of Brasilia paid $3.9 million to Brazil-based Ailanto Marketing to promote the match held in Brasilia.
Lopes says he wants to know how the money was spent, what happened to the money from ticket sales and why the Brasilia municipal Football Federation and not Ailanto ended up footing the bill for the friendly.
Police did not return calls requesting details on the case.
