Full-back Kyle Naughton made his first appearance since signing on a season loan from Tottenham, while Wales international Steve Morison, one of seven summer arrivals, led the visitors' attack. There was little goalmouth action in a tepid first-half. Canaries midfielder Wes Hoolahan scuffed his shot when clean through, and then saw a better effort saved by Glenn Morris, who also held onto David Fox's 25-yard free-kick. Norwich - beaten 1-0 at Crystal Palace on Tuesday night - made the expected sweeping changes as the hour mark passed, Naughton one of those replaced, but it was Southend who almost broke the deadlock when Bilel Mohsni crashed a close-range header off the crossbar. Simon Lappin blazed over after breaking down the left, and Chris Martin's curling free-kick was saved, but overall the newly promoted Barclays Premier League side - who had scored some 26 goals in their first three warm-up games - lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Canaries boss Paul Lambert was happy with Naughton's contribution. "He is really quick and to come in after he only just met everybody yesterday after coming back from South Africa with Spurs, I thought he did fine," said Lambert. Norwich continue their pre-season preparations at Coventry on Saturday, ahead of home friendlies against Spanish side Real Zaragoza and Italian outfit Parma before the opening Premier League fixture at Wigan on August 13. "At the moment, it is just trying to keep everybody fit. As soon as the games start to work down next week, the team will gel together to get ready for Wigan," Lambert added. However, the Norwich manager revealed centre-back Elliott Ward and striker James Vaughan were set for a spell on the sidelines with knee injuries picked up during the Germany tour. "They are going to miss the start of it, which is a bit of a blow for us, but we have to go on and that is why you have the squad," said Lambert. "It is not a few months, or anything like that. Hopefully they will be back quite soon."
