Bordeaux missed the chance to go provisionally top of the French league after losing 1-0 at defending champion Montpellier on Sunday.
Remy Cabella scored in the 68th minute to give struggling Montpellier its first victory in four matches.
Montpellier also had a second goal ruled out 12 minutes from time after the referee ruled the ball had gone out of play before being crossed into the area.
Bordeaux struggled to create clear opportunities and remains fourth ahead of the rest of the weekend fixtures, having ended a run of five successive wins in all competitions.
The result took Montpellier three points above the relegation zone.
Bordeaux had won its previous three league matches, without conceding a goal but it was almost behind in the 11th minute as Marco Estrada's inswinging corner crashed off the right post.
Nicolas Maurice-Belay went close for Bordeaux as he beat the offside trap, rounded Montpellier goalkeeper Laurent Pionnier and fired towards an empty net, but the ball was cleared by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Montpellier upped the pressure in the second half but poor finishing let the home side down.
It finally broke the deadlock in the 68th when Cabella controlled Romain Pitau's pass perfectly before firing past Cedric Carrasso.
Estrada almost doubled its lead four minutes later but Carrasso did well to punch clear his 30-meter free kick.
Montpellier thought it had got a second when Younes Belhanda did brilliantly to beat Florian Marange on the right flank before crossing into Yanga-Mbiwa, who beat Carrasso, but the goal was ruled out.
