Bayern's Shaqiri heads Swiss squad to face Cyprus

Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri heads an 18-man Switzerland squad to face Cyprus in a World Cup qualifying match next week.
Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld on Tuesday left out forward Admir Mehmedi and midfielder Gelson Fernandes for the June 8 match in Geneva.
The Swiss football federation said Hitzfeld explained to the players that he decided to prepare with a smaller group.
Hitzfeld will be absent as he completes a two-match ban imposed by FIFA for an offensive gesture toward the referee during a previous qualifier.
Shaqiri, who was an unused substitute in Bayern's Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, is among seven players with Bundesliga teams in the squad. Seven are based in Italy and one, Fulham defender Philippe Senderos, plays for an English club.
Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio returns after being suspended for a 0-0 draw in Cyprus in March.
Zurich forwards Mario Gavranovic and Josip Drmic have been recalled after being injured and omitted, respectively.
Switzerland leads its group by two points from Iceland and Albania midway through the 10-match program.
