Bayern Munich have confirmed that neither Bastian Schweinsteiger nor Franck Ribery will return in time for their Champions League clash with Porto this week.

The German champions travel to Portugal for Wednesday night's quarter-final first-leg match at Estadio do Dragao without two of their key players.

Vice-captain Schweinsteiger missed last Wednesday's DFB-Pokal quarter-final victory at Bayer Leverkusen with an ankle injury, and has since been unable to overcome a virus.

Former France international Ribery is still struggling with the ankle injury that has seen him miss the last five matches for Pep Gurdiola's side.

A statement on Bayern's official website fcbayern.de, read: "The injury and selection situation at Bayern remains a cause for concern as it was revealed that hopes of a return for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery have been dashed.

"The vice-captain has been unable to shake a stubborn viral infection and the French winger continues to be troubled by a painful ankle injury.

"Neither player will travel to Portugal, meaning both are definitely out of the big European clash."

Last month, Bayern produced a dominant performance to see off Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 in the last 16 of the competition and they travel to Porto with a number of injuries to contend with, but look to welcome back Jerome Boateng and Claudio Pizarro.

Sporting director Matthias Sammer told a press conference: "It's a real shame but Bastian and Franck can't come with us.

"Pep will now decide whether to take along another of our young players."
