Bayern put focus on Cluj clash

Bayern have immediately brought a halt to the tussle that had threatened to undermine the club's European and domestic ambitions. The clash with Cluj has been totally overshadowed by a simmering spat between president Uli Hoeness and coach Louis van Gaal. Hoeness went on German television on Sunday night to launch an astonishing attack on the veteran Dutch boss, questioning his man-management skills and the use of certain fringe players. But the pair today agreed to put aside their differences at clear-the-air talks. The pair, along with chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, vice-chairman Karl Hopfner and sporting director Christian Nerlinger, held an "open discussion" immediately after arriving in Cluj for of the match. A Bayern statement read: "In an open discussion views were expressed and exchanged extensively. "It was agreed for those present to meet together more often in future and to discuss all topics relating to Bayern Munich. "At the end of the conversation Uli Hoeness and Louis van Gaal shook hands and agreed to work responsibly together in the future for the benefit of Bayern Munich." The comments, strangely, came at a time when results have been steadily improving after a poor start to the season. The spat with Hoeness was just one of Van Gaal's concerns in the build-up to the match, however, with his squad riddled with injuries. The latest player to be struck down was striker Ivica Olic, who was yesterday ruled out for six months with a knee ligament damage. He joins Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, captain Mark van Bommel and Miroslav Klose on the injury list. Bayern are at least in good shape in the Champions League having claimed three wins from their opening three games in Group E. A win on Wednesday would see last year's beaten finalists secure a place in the knockout stage. Despite winning just one of their opening three matches, Cluj are also in contention to make the last 16. Their domestic league form continues to be erratic, though, with a 1-1 draw at Otelul Galati on Saturday seeing them remain in mid-table.
