Bayern Munich's supervisory board is backing Uli Hoeness to remain club president despite the ongoing tax evasion investigation against him.

Bayern said in a statement on Monday that Hoeness apologized and offered to temporarily give up his functions pending the outcome of his legal case but the board unanimously asked him to stay on.

Hoeness faces a tricky legal situation after reporting himself to authorities over a previously undeclared Swiss bank account, in a move that could spare him prison time.

Hoeness is widely credited with building Bayern Munich into a bastion of financial health and one of the top clubs in the world. The team will play Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium on May 25.
