Bayern Munich Kicks Off Champions League Against Rostov

Bayern Munich opens their Champion League campaign on Tuesday as they take on FC Rostov in Allianz Arena and the affair could be a bit more interesting than anticipated.
FC Rostov travels to Allianz Arena to play a formidable Bayern Munich side on Tuesday to open up Champions League play. If Bayern wants to start Champions League strong, this game is a must win, and they must win by a considerable margin.
Since winning Champions League in 2013, Bayern Munich has struggled to repeat the experience, and they are hoping to fix that with their new manager, Carlo Ancelotti. With Bayern Munich, Carlo Ancelotti is trying to become the first manager to win the Champions League with 3 different clubs.
Champions League is a special tournament to Ancelotti, and winning the tournament is a priority for the team this year, but easily crushing Rostov may not be the guarantee everyone thinks it is. Ancelotti says of the Russian opponent: “The result against Amsterdam [5-2 winners on aggregate] speaks volumes. They work well together as a team, despite not boasting any real stars. Defending with five at times, they’re strong at the back. They’ll be very tough to break down.”
Rostov certainly has a better defensive record than anticipated. In their top tier league play last season, they conceded just 20 goals in 30 games, despite the fact they do not have any huge names anchoring their back line. Rostov managed good results in Champions League qualifying, especially the above mentioned defeat of Ajax Amsterdam and that definitely gives them confidence going into this match against Bayern Munich.

While it’s unlikely that Bayern Munich will have a tremendous amount of nerves before this game, they do need to carry over their good Bundesliga form to this Champions League game if they want to get off to a strong start in Champions League.
