Former Everton youngster Jose Baxter featured for Oldham's reserves against Hartlepool as he seeks to earn a contract with Paul Dickov's men.

The 20-year-old forward played 78 minutes on Tuesday afternoon as Latics' second string prevailed 2-1 - a solo effort from trainee Chris Sutherland providing the decisive moment.

Baxter, who took Wayne Rooney's mantle as Everton's youngster ever player when he featured against Blackburn on the opening day of the 2008/09 season, left Goodison Park in the summer after turning down a two-year deal in search of regular first-team football.

Last season he made 15 appearances in a loan spell with Oldham's npower League One counterparts Tranmere.
