Barcelona defender Maxwell will miss the first leg of the Champions League semifinal clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday because of a groin injury.

The club announced late Monday that the defender had not recovered after being hurt in the 2-0 win over Osasuna on Saturday.

Barcelona will be without either of its left backs, with Adriano out for most of the season with a muscle tear.

Center back Gabriel Milito has recovered from a lower body injury and joins the squad for the game at Santiago Bernabeu stadium, along with captain Carles Puyol.

Coach Pep Guardiola will likely have to use a defensive midfielder in Sergio Busquets or Javier Mascherano in defense.
