Promotion-chasing Swiss club Bellinzona faces bankruptcy with reported debts of 8.5 million Swiss francs ($9.1 million).

The Swiss Football League says it ''notes with regret'' the decision of a judge in Lugano on Monday to open bankruptcy proceedings instead of postponing the decision for two weeks.

The league ''wishes to find a solution that allows the club to finish the season, whatever happens.''

Bellinzona, whose squad includes former Switzerland striker Hakan Yakin, trails second-tier leader Aarau by three points. Each has nine matches remaining.
