Rashad Sadygov struck in the first half to edge Azerbaijan past Turkey 1-0 in their 2012 European Championship qualifying match Tuesday.

The hosts' captain slotted the ball low through a crowded penalty box on 35 minutes after an imaginative set play that saw two forwards dummy the ball with step-overs from a corner.

Turkey had the majority of possession and carved out several clear-cut chances but failed to beat Azerbaijan goalkeeper Kamran Agayev. The visitors came closest in the 25th, with Hamit Altintop's thunderous drive from 30 meters smashing against the crossbar.

The surprise win brings Azerbaijan its first points of the campaign, after being trounced 6-1 in Germany and 3-0 in Austria, and lifts it from the bottom of Group A. Turkey, which won its opening two games before losing to Germany, remains third on six points.

Midfielders Emre Belozoglu and Altintop provided Turkey with most of its openings at the Tofig Bahramov-Republic stadium but the visitors looked vulnerable in defense and were left exposed during counterattacks.

Vagif Dzhavadov missed a chance inside the first 10 minutes to put Azerbaijan ahead, racing through and chipping over Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel but past the post.

Sadygov blasted a long-range free kick just over soon after.

After hitting the bar, Altintop poked a shot straight at Agayev after a defense-splitting one-two with Semih Senturk on the edge of the area.

Agayev then rescued Azerbaijan again, rising to catch a close-range half-volley from Gokhan Gonul.

Early in the second half Demirel denied the hosts what appeared to be a certain second, desperately sticking out a leg to deflect away a point-blank shot from substitute Alexander Chertoganov.

Altintop later barged through the penalty box and headed the ball on to Turkey substitute Nihat Kahveci, who volleyed straight at Agayev.

Halil Altintop, who came on with eight minutes to play, failed to convert after a goalmouth scramble left him four meters out with the goal at his mercy.

In the dying minutes Kahveci stormed into the area but his shot from eight meters was blocked by a defender .
