The Austrian football federation said Friday that defender Paul Scharner will never play for the national team again after leaving the players' hotel a few hours before a friendly following a dispute with coach Marcel Koller.
''The player Paul Scharner, regardless who is the coach, will not be called up for any national team in the future,'' the federation said in a statement.
Koller said Scharner left the hotel after unsuccessfully demanding a place in the starting lineup for Wednesday's match against Turkey, which Austria won 2-0.
''I never promise anyone a place on the team,'' Koller said after the match.
However, Scharner said he left when being told he wouldn't play a part in Koller's future plans.
''Newspapers wrote before the match I wasn't going to play against Turkey or in the future,'' Scharner was quoted as saying on his club Hamburg's website. ''Koller then told me I would not play under him anymore and asked me to leave the hotel.''
The 32-year-old Scharner, who joined Hamburg this season after stints at Wigan and West Bromwich Albion in England, played 40 internationals, making him one of the most experienced members of the squad.
Only captain Christian Fuchs, Emanuel Pogatetz and Andreas Ivanschitz have more caps.
It wasn't Scharner's first fallout with the national team. He was dropped in 2006 after publicly criticizing the national federation for being ''unprofessional.''
He missed the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland in 2008 before then coach Karel Bruckner got him back on the team later that year.
