Atletico Madrid will be without Diego Godin for up to a month after the Uruguay defender was diagnosed with appendicitis on Saturday.
The Spanish club said Godin was to undergo an emergency appendectomy to remove his appendix after being admitted to a hospital early Saturday morning.
Godin has been a key offseason addition to Atletico's defense, which was one of the worst in the league last season. Atletico coach Quique Sanchez Flores said center back Alvaro Dominguez is returning from injury to fill in for Godin, starting with Sunday's game against Almeria.
