Atalanta striker Guido Marilungo is facing another lengthy layoff after rupturing a cruciate ligament, just weeks after coming back from six months out after a similar injury.

Marilungo was weeping while being carried off on a stretcher at the end of the first half of Atalanta's 3-1 win over Cesena in the Italian Cup on Wednesday - the first game he had started since his comeback.

Tests on Thursday revealed the 23-year-old striker has snapped a ligament in his right knee and is unlikely to play again this season.

Marilungo had an operation earlier this year after rupturing a ligament in the same knee in March.
