The English Football Association says Arsenal and Newcastle have each been fined 30,000 pounds ($50,000) over a mass confrontation during their bad-tempered Premier League opener.

Arsenal striker Gervinho was sent off in the second half for slapping Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton after the pair squared up following what the Magpies claimed was a dive.

That led to the confrontation and the FA's independent regulatory commission finding both clubs guilty of failing to control their players.

Arsenal midfielder Alex Song is already serving a three-ban match for stamping on Barton's leg in an incident not seen by the referee in the 0-0 draw on Aug. 13.
