Arsenal falls to Shakhtar in Ukraine

Eduardo scored a first-half winner against his former team Wednesday as Shakhtar Donetsk beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Champions League to go level with the English club atop Group H.
Arsenal took an early lead through Theo Walcott, but the Ukrainian champion hit back with a header by Dmyrto Chygrynskiy before Eduardo's strike. Both teams need to win one of their final two games to secure a place in the knockout stage.
Arsenal started strong and went 1-0 up after Walcott sprinted clear in the 10th minute and slotted home, before Shakhtar settled and began to play incisive attacking football.
Chygrynskiy headed the home side level in the 28th minute, and Eduardo sidefooted home the winner in the 45th after captain Dario Srna picked him out in the box.
Arsenal dominated early possession and looked dangerous in Shakhtar's half, much like in the 5-1 win in London two weeks ago.
Samir Nasri beat a couple of opponents in the sixth minute before blasting a shot along the surface that hit the outside of Andriy Pyatov's left post.
Four minutes later, Arsenal was ahead.
A Shakhtar attack was broken up and Walcott burst over the halfway line and onto a throughball. He raced clear of the defense before sliding the ball past Pyatov from 20 yards out.
The Gunners looked comfortable controlling possession and playing high up the pitch. But Shakhtar started building some attacks of its own, led by the speed and quick footwork of Willian.
In the 18th minute, Razvan Rat found Jadson unmarked near the penalty spot, but his sidefooted shot was saved. The ball was crossed back in and Jadson, again free in the center, slammed a header against the bottom of Lucasz Fabianski's left-hand post.
A few seconds later, Yaroslav Rakytskiy's shot from a corner rebounded to Chygrynskiy, who blasted a close-range volley at goal, only to see Fabianski pull off an excellent reaction stop.
Shakhtar leveled in the 28th minute after Chygrynskiy rose at the near post to meet Jadson's free kick, and his header deflected off Craig Eastmond and flew past Fabianski.
The home side continued pressing. Srna easily dispossessed Gael Clichy wide on the right in the final minute of the half and cut into the box. He picked out Eduardo near the penalty spot, who calmly sidefooted into the far corner.
Arsenal came out in the second half on the attack.
Poor Shakhtar defending in the 55th minute allowed Jack Wilshere to slip clear in the box, but he whipped his left-footed shot off the top of the bar.
Jadson had a penalty claim turned down at the other end in the 63rd minute when he was brought down after pushing the ball past Sebastien Squillaci.
One minute later at the other end, Squillaci should have done better with a free header from eight yards, but Pyatov made a smart save diving down to his right.
Arsenal had plenty of possession, but couldn't get a clear shot on goal. Shakhtar was resilient in defending an unbeaten home record that has stood for two years.
The Ukrainians almost had the last word in injury, when substitute Marcelo Moreno fired a shot toward the far post, which Fabianski had to push wide at full stretch.
Arsenal next travels to Braga on Nov. 23, with Shakhtar heading to Partizan Belgrade.
