Daniele Arrigoni has been hired as the new coach of last-place Serie A club Cesena on a one-year contract.

Arrigoni, who spent three years as a player with Cesena, was appointed Tuesday to replace the sacked Marco Giampaolo and will take charge of his first training session Wednesday.

Giampaolo was sacked Sunday soon after a 2-0 loss at Parma that left winless Cesena with just three points from nine matches.

''I think there is still room to reach safety and I am convinced by that,'' Arrigoni said. ''The squad has a lot of talent. I've seen almost all the games and the team could have done more.

''It's a great dream for me to coach Cesena, but I have one aim from now until the end of the season. I think I can give a lot more when I'm under pressure. Now our only aim is to pick up points.''

The 52-year-old Arrigoni's last managerial position was with Sassuolo. He was fired in October 2010 following just a few months in charge after losing four of the first seven league games.

''The choice of Arrigoni as coach gives me positive energy,'' Cesena president Igor Campedelli said. ''As well as a conviction that, seeing as he's from here, he can help us achieve our aim of safety.

''Cesena always has to be determined, it can win or lose but it needs determination. I haven't seen in any coach the same determination that I see in Arrigoni.''

Arrigoni has coached at the top level before, when in charge of Cagliari, Bologna and Livorno. He was sacked from all three positions following bad results, but did manage to steer Cagliari to 10th spot in his first season in at the helm.
