League-leading Velez Sarsfield failed to stretch its lead at the top of the Argentine Clausura championship on Sunday after losing 2-1 at mid-table Tigre.

Denis Stracqualursi gave Tigre a 1-0 lead in the 26th, converting a penalty for his 11th goal of the season. Velez equalized with Ricardo Alvarez's 25-yard strike in the 63rd, but Gaston Diaz restored Tigre's lead two minutes later with a sensational 20-yard rising shot from the right wing.

Velez has 30 points from 16 matches, three more than Godoy Cruz, which has a game in hand and could move into a share of the lead with a victory Monday against Gimnasia. Also on Monday, Lanus plays Huracan. Three rounds remain.

In other Sunday matches, Boca Juniors defeated Newell's 1-0 and Independiente won over Estudiantes 2-0.

Boca Juniors won via a 50th-minute goal by Martin Palermo. Boca improved to 25 points and Newell's stayed in last place with only 11 points in 16 matches.

Independiente picked up its victory over Estudiantes with goals from Leonel Galeano late in the first half and Cristian Pellerano in the 48th minute. Independiente also improved to 25 points and Estudiantes stayed on 19.

In a late match, River Plate drew 0-0 with Olimpo. Olimpo has 26 points and River improved to 24.

On Saturday, Argentinos Juniors defeated Colon 2-1, Arsenal and San Lorenzo drew 1-1, All Boys defeated Quilmes 1-0 and Banfield won over Racing 3-1.
