Estudiantes went back to the top of the standings in Argentina's
Clausura tournament, with Facundo Quiroga's 21st minute own goal
enough for a 1-0 win over River Plate.
Quiroga - formerly of Wolfsburg, Napoli and Sporting Lisbon -
attempted a clearance of a cross by Enzo Perez but it looped over
the goalkeeper and into the net.
The victory improved Estudiantes to 33 points, two ahead of
Godoy Cruz and Independiente. Argentinos Juniors is four points
back but had a game in hand. It was Estudiantes' fourth straight
victory with three rounds remaining.
Independiente drew 0-0 at Hurucan and Godoy Cruz defeated
Chacarita 1-0 on Friday. In Friday's other result, Velez Sarsfield
defeated Tigre 1-0.
In other Saturday matches, Lanus downed Arsenal 4-1 and
Newell's Old Boys trounced Colon 5-0.
Defender Santiago Hoyos, Paraguayan striker Santiago Salcedo,
Leonardo Diaz and Javier Carrasco scored in Lanus' 4-1 rout of
Arsenal. Luciano Leguizamon scored for Arsenal, which finished with
10 men.
Newell's had a goal feast with two from Joaquin Bohossian and
others from Mauricio Sperdutti, Mauro Formica and Jorge Achucarro.
Sunday's games were: Argentinos Juniors-Gimnasia;
Racing-Banfield; AtleticoTucuman-Rosario Central; Boca Juniors-San
Lorenzo.
