The all-Eredivisie tie saw FC Groningen eliminate ADO Den Haag after a late equaliser and penalty shoot-out drama. Ajax progressed thanks to second-half goals in their 3-0 victory over second-division outfit Veendam on Thursday night. Former Tottenham, Middlesbrough, Wigan and West Ham striker Mido opened the scoring on the hour mark and star man Luis Suarez (77) and Christian Eriksen (87) made sure of the win. Eredivisie side Heracles were knocked out in the shock of the night as they threw away a two-goal lead to lose a 5-3 thriller at third division Achilles. Darl Douglas and Everton Ramos da Silva had given Heracles a comfortable lead inside half-an-hour. But Achilles hit back in a three minute-spell through a Tim Verhoeven penalty (45) and Ivo Rigter (48), only to see Douglas (51) restore a lead for Heracles. Despite trailing 3-2 going into the last half-an-hour, Achilles did not lose heart and goals from Frank Hol (64 and 87) either side of another Verhoeven penalty (70) completed a memorable turnaround. Groningen eliminated top-flight rivals Den Haag after holding their nerve in a penalty shoot-out. Lex Immers had given Den Haag a 63rd minute lead, but Groningen defender Jonas Ivens sent the match into extra-time with an 83rd minute leveller. After a goalless additional half-an-hour, Ivens' late equaliser proved invaluable as Groningen won 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.
