Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Sergio Aguero will miss the Champions League match with Roma, but does not know the extent of the injury.

Aguero limped off inside three minutes of Manchester City's 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday evening, after sustaining a knee injury as he stretched for a loose ball. The 26-year-old had netted seven goals in his previous eight Premier League appearances at the Etihad Stadium, but left the pitch in tears as he feared the worst after having to withdraw from the match.

City have a run of games against teams in the bottom half as they look to take the initiative in the title race after Chelsea's defeat at Newcastle, and Pellegrini could face the prospect of a lengthy absence for his star man. But the City boss was refusing to fear the worst and said he will wait until the extent of Aguero's injury is assessed.

"Sergio has a problem with the ligament in his knee," he said. "We'll see tomorrow how serious it is, but it's not good news. I don't think he will be able to play next week. We don't know [how long he will be out]. We must wait for the doctor – the important thing is that he will not be able to play against Roma, which for us is a very important game."

Edin Dzeko appeared to be ready to replace Aguero, but Pellegrini changed his mind and threw on youngster Jose Angel Pozo instead as the City manager said Dzeko did not have the fitness to last that long.

"[Dzeko] was not able to play 70, 80 minutes," he added. "He was able to play maximum 25, 30 minutes, no more. That's why I trusted Pozo – I think he had a good game, gave a good performance. He had a shot that was a very good save from the Everton goalkeeper, but he was in more condition to play than Edin Dzeko."
