Sergio Aguero returned from a monthlong injury layoff to score and set up another goal in Atletico Madrid's 3-0 win against Rosenborg in the Europa League on Thursday.

Defending champion Atletico notched its first victory in the competition as Diego Godin used a glancing header to guide Jose Antonio Reyes' darting cross past goalkeeper Daniel Orlund for a 17th-minute lead at Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Aguero scored only one minute after replacing Diego Forlan in the 65th as the Argentina striker stole away to lead a breakout he would eventually cap by moving past two defenders inside the area before slotting a quick shot through the legs of Orlund.

Aguero finished a well-worked one-two with Diego Castro by lofting the ball over the defense for the Brazilian striker to head past Orlund in the 77th.

Atletico climbed off the bottom of Group B to join Aris Thessaloniki on four points - one better than the Norwegian side. Bayer Leverkusen leads with five points following a 0-0 draw with Aris.

Simao Sabrosa shot over from close-range following a Rosenborg turnover deep in its area two minutes into a frenetic start, which was swayed in Atletico's favor as Daniel Orlund saved Filipe Luis' shot only two minutes later.

While Godin notched his first with the Spanish capital club for a deserved lead, Rosenborg began to show signs of a fightback as Markus Henriksen tested Joel Robles with a hard crossgoal shot in the 24th.

Orlund stayed alert to Atletico's pressure as he was perfectly placed in the 32nd to block Diego Costa's redirected shot from just two meters away from the goal line.

Joel replaced injured regular David De Gea in goal and showed none of the nerves one would have expected in a first-team debut on the European stage. Morten Moldskred raced through the area in the 45th to latch on to a bouncing ball Atletico's defense failed to clear but Joel got enough of the shot as it went through his legs to redirect it off the post and out.

With Atletico's gameplan stalling and the Vicente Calderon growing impatient, Aguero replaced Forlan and made an immediate impact as the Spanish club got itself right back into the race to win the group.
