An Argentine Football Association official says Sergio Batista is the "most appropriate choice" to take over as national team coach following the departure of Diego Maradona.

Humberto Grondona, assistant director for national team selections, spoke in a radio interview. He is the son of AFA president Julio Grondona.

The 47-year-old Batista led Argentina to the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics and has won two of three friendlies since taking over as interim coach following the World Cup. He defeated Ireland 1-0 and beat World Cup champion Spain 4-1.

The only blemish is a 1-0 loss earlier this month against Japan.
