Brazilian striker Adriano has ruptured his left Achilles' tendon and will need surgery that will sideline him for five months.

The former Inter Milan and Roma striker was hurt during a light practice session on Tuesday, and doctors scheduled surgery for Wednesday.

Adriano signed for Corinthians in March and had been recovering from a shoulder injury. He was expected to make his debut with the Sao Paulo club in May at the start of the Brazilian league.

The 29-year-old striker played in the 2006 World Cup but missed last year's tournament in South Africa despite leading Flamengo to the national league title the year before.
