A senior football official in Bahrain says four national team players have been suspended for supporting anti-government protests.
The official says the players have been suspended by their clubs because ''they are against the government.'' The club suspension automatically disqualifies them from the national team, the official said. He was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
Bahrain declared emergency rule last month and cracked down on protests by the country's Shiite majority against the Sunni monarchy.
A leading human rights activist in Bahrain, Mohammed al-Maskati, says the suspended players are Shiite. He says three of them have been in custody since Tuesday.
