Police say they have arrested two senior Croatian football officials on suspicion they took payments in return for guaranteeing that matches would be refereed fairly.

Police said Friday that the payments, allegedly made to Deputy President of Croatian Football Association Zeljko Siric and the head of the body's referee commission, Stjepan Djedovic, amounted to bribes. Croatian media reported that the money was paid by clubs.

The pair are suspected of pocketing some ?100,000 ($133,000) for making sure that first division matches would get fair refereeing, police said. They were caught when they took ?30,000 from an undercover anti-corruption agent.

The anti-graft police did not say for which matches they took the bribes.
