Malaysian authorities have canceled a football semifinal and arrested 13 people after rival fans hurled water bottles at each other in an overcrowded stadium.

More than 40,000 spectators flooded the 35,000-seat Darulmakmur Stadium in east Malaysia late Tuesday for a Football Association Cup semi between Pahang and Johor state teams.

District police official Abdul Aziz Ahmad said frustrated fans tried to barge into the stadium and threw projectiles at rival supporters. One woman sustained minor injuries, while 10 people reported damaged vehicles outside.

Abdul Aziz said police detained 13 men for minor offenses including making obscene gestures and threatening each other. He added that authorities escorted Johor's visiting fans out of the stadium to prevent serious clashes.
