Cowboys starting right tackle Doug Free is having a disappointing season. The 28-year-old has been called for a league-high 11 penalties and allowed three of Tony Romo's career-high seven sacks on Sunday, according to ProFootballFocus.com.
Free signed a four-year, $32 million contract in 2011 so it's difficult to imagine the Cowboys removing him from the starting lineup. But what about a position change, possibly guard?
It's unlikely, but Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones didn't rule it out on Tuesday.
"Well, you can move offensive players around," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "Mackenzy Bernadeau is a perfect example. He's a little bright light for us over there at center. But when I look at our potential here, we got some moving parts, as time goes along, we'll take a look at. But I think in Tyron Smith and [Jermey] Parnell, we've seen Doug Free play some real good right tackle. We've seen him play some reasonably good left tackle.
"As you would look across the league, is it enough? Romo can negotiate with the right tackle, most of the time. He sees it, he's right-handed, he can look at it. It's different on the blind side than over on the left side. And that push up the middle is a big thing, too, since we're talking about the offensive line. That bothers [Romo] more than anything. So you weigh all of this, I think that's a work in progress on the offensive line, and I'd like for it to be better but we've got a hell of a coach. He can do a good job with it, Bill Callahan."
Free, who was a fourth-round pick in 2007, played left tackle during the 2011 and 2010 seasons after playing right tackle in 2009. He has never played either of the guard positions or center for the Cowboys. Free played left tackle for the majority of his college career at Northern Illinois.
