Wisconsin-Whitewater makes history with NCAA championships triple crown
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater finished off a triple crown never before seen in collegiate sports.
The Warhawks beat Emory 7-0 Tuesday in the championship game of the Division III World Series to become the first NCAA school to win titles in football, men's basketball and baseball in one calendar year.
The run started Dec. 20, 2013, when the football team completed a 15-0 season by pummeling Mount Union 52-14 to win the DIII championship. Just more than three months later, on March 22, 2014, the Warhawks edged Williams College 75-73 to capture the Division III NCAA men's basketball tournament.
UW-Whitewater ended its season on an 11-game winning streak, including going unbeaten in the World Series tournament, to win just its second baseball title (the other came in 2005).
When Warhawks starting pitcher Scott Plaza, who tossed his fifth complete game of the season, got Emory's Phillip Maldari to fly out to center field to end the championship game, the celebration was on for UW-Whitewater and the many fans who traveled to the game.
It's a scene UW-Whitewater is quite familiar with recently.
